Transitioning to Natural Hair

Transitioning to Natural Hair by VonevaGlam featuring couture hair accessories

Transitioning to natural hair seems to be all the rave on the salon scene these days. But with all the excitement there are many who are apprehensive and anxious about what they will do with their hair on a day to day basis. Well first of all, let me say this. Going natural does not mean you have to grow dreads or where and afro or braids. It simply means that you are no longer relaxing your hair. Which is most likely a good thing because many peoples hair remains so much healthier without it. Now there are some things that you should know about transitioning from relaxed hair to natural and it is strictly based on your hair type. Just as your relaxer regimen in based on each individual so is your natural hair care regimen and you should consult a professional to have a regimen customized for you. Never the less, here's some general insight and options for the transition, but the first thing you need to do is recognize that this is a change, a process, and you must be willing to give up the concept of perfection and embrace the beauty in the flaws. So as some mothers would say." Fix your face and come on!"....(its all for the greater good:)

Now that you have made the decision to let the chemicals go, you must prepare yourself for your hair to possibly continue to shed and break. So if you  are not prepared to cut it all off at the new growth, you still have the following options: continue to get it shampooed, deep conditioned, and styled as usual until it is at a comfortable length that you are ready to cut all the relaxed hair, get braids, or consider wearing a weave that is sewn in.
Wearing braids or extensions is a great way to allow variation in styles while going through the process of transitioning. Alternating from different braids and weave styles really helps with the anxiety of not knowing what to do to your hair on a day to day basis. Full weaves are excellent in for transition because it allows all of your hair to be protected and maximum growth potential to be reached during the transition process. It also allows for you to continue to wear your original style in a weave while your natural hair is resting from chemicals and heat. However, regardless of your methods of transition there are key things that I recommend:

  •  Shampoo and Condition your hair with a moisturizing and conditioning system
  • Get deep conditioning treatments on a regular basis
  • Hot oil treatments are great if you are doing a transition with or without extensions. If you are transitioning with extensions get a hot oil treatment after your weave has been taken down ,before your hair is re braided for re application.
  • Wrap your hair in a satin bonnet or sleep on satin sheets this helps your hair retain moisture and prevents breakage.
